What are cities for?

Cities are increasingly the space in which we live our lives, as city populations have rapidly increased over the last century (Harvey 2013, WHO 2020, UN 2018, IMF 2007). They are therefore the space in which humans pursue our goals, and human development occurs.

Clarifying what the city is for is then increasingly important. In this presentation we have set out how the capability approach can be applied in Leeds, reflecting on our work with partners across the city since April 2020, and look towards the future with equity and adequate infrastructure for all in light of this renewed emphasis on digital capabilities.
